Sharath demos Karandavasana

I just stumbled upon this very beautiful video of Sharath demo-ing Karandavasana on the stage at KPJAYI in Mysore. At the same time, at the other corner of the stage, his son performs a never-before-seen asana with some mysterious looking string (anybody know what the name of that asana is?).

Even though I am not working on Karandavasana right now, I suspect that many of you out there are, and will probably benefit from watching this wonderful video; besides, as of right now, the video has only 45 views! This is an injustice that needs to be righted, and you can play a part :-)

  1. I think I posted this same Karandavasana but taken from somebody else in the crowd, different angle.
Sharath's practice never looks that great to me first time I see it, I mean he keeps his arms straight which is miles better than mine ( but then I stopped bothering with this ages ago, amazed I can still do it at all) he's never...elegant. But when you look more closely, the snap here into lotus revealing how rock steady his picha mayurasana is and then how deeply into his armpits he gets his knees when lowering, it's a masterclass. Love the seeming lack of polish, he's efficient, nails the asana and to hell with how pretty it looks. That said I happen to think he has the most beautiful jump through, so delicate and again, efficient, not fancy but efficient, which is perhaps all you need in this practice of ours.

    1. Yes, it doesn't look like he's trying to impress anybody with the way his practice looks. It basically is just the way the posture looks on his body, fancy or not. Which is probably where we all end up when we have been practicing for a while: Efficiency over beauty of form.
